JOHN BERRY, a carpenter by trade, owns and occupies forty acres of land on section 7, Taylor Township, where he enjoys all the comforts and many of the luxuries of life. He was born in Gallia County, Ohio, April 19, 1833, and is a son of Joshua and Anna (Tharp) Berry, his father a native of North Carolina and his mother of Virginia. His parents emigrated from Ohio to Indiana about 1836, where they remained until 1852. In the fall of that year they came to Benton County, Iowa, locating in Polk Township, where his father bought a farm and lived there with his family about eight years. He then moved near Shellsburg, where he died in May, 1879. The mother is yet living and resides with her son Robert.

The subject of our sketch was reared on a farm, and remained with his parents until about twenty years of age. He then learned the carpenter's trade, which occupation he has since followed, In 1875 be bought forty acres of land on section 7, Taylor Township, which is finely cultivated, and on which he erected a neat, two-story frame house, in which he now resides.

He was married, Oct. 31, 1859, to Maria, daughter of James and Mary (Carns) Gilliland. They are the parents of three children — Samuel D., married to Anna Miller, is a farmer on section 7, Taylor Township, they have two children — Vena and Flossie; Ella, now the wife of Ira Duncan, a harness-maker in Vinton; they have one child — Cecil B.; Sarah C. is now the wife of Everett Miller, of Oberlin, Decatur Co., Kan.

Mr. and Mrs. Berry are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Berry is highly respected in his community and is performing the duties of a good citizen, a kind neighbor and a worthy father and friend.
