His father is a native of Perry County, Ohio, born in December, 1824, and his mother of Vermont. They are residing in Vinton, having removed from Fremont, Ohio, in the spring of 1885. Irving Mitchell was reared in his native town and received a common-school education. In the spring of 1863 he enlisted in Co. H, 169th Ohio Vol. Inf. The regiment rendezvoused at Columbus, Ohio, from which place it was sent to Washington, D. C., and subsequently to Fort Ethan Allen. He served nine months, was mustered out, and then returned to his home in Ohio. In the spring of 1875 he moved to Vinton, Benton Co., Iowa, where he engaged in the purchase and shipment of poultry, butter and eggs, in which business he still continues, in company with his brother, L. A. Mitchell, and I. M. Garn. They are doing a very large business, which in the year 1885 amounted to nearly half a million dollars. They have six of their own refrigerator cars, in which they ship their butter, eggs and poultry. They also deal in wool.

Mr. Mitchell was married, in Fremont, Sandusky Co., Ohio, Feb. 8, 1866, to Miss L. E. Lichty, daughter of John and Susan Lichty, born in Richland County, Ohio, June 59 (sic), 1844. They have three children — two sons and one daughter: Cordelia E., born in Sandusky County, Ohio, Dec. 12, 1866; Jay J., born in Helena, Ohio, April 7, 1872; Oliver, born in Helena, Aug. 23, 1874.

Mr. Mitchell owns his fine residence, corner Main and Railroad streets. He also owns two other dwellings in Vinton, and 360 acres in the West, 320 of it in Sherman County, Neb., and forty in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa. In the fall of 1883 Mr. M. was elected to the office of Sheriff of Benton County, and served one term. He is a member of the Benton County Veteran Association; of P. M. Coder Post, No. 98, G. A. R., of Vinton Lodge No. 83, I. O. O. F., and of Vinton Encampment, No. 59.
