HON. A. L. BROOKS.

Floral Divider Bar

REPRESENTATIVE.--Too much praise cannot be given this gentleman. He was born thirty-three years ago on a farm in Benton county, Iowa, where he remained and tilled the soil until he was about eighteen years of age, at which time he began to teach school, hoping thereby to earn sufficient money to enable him to attend college. Fortune favored his ambitious nature and he soon entered the Rush Medical College, at Chicago, and after years of diligent study he received a reward for his labors and was awarded a diploma. He drifted to the west eight years ago and commenced to practice medicine at Gray, this county, from which place he came to Audubon, where he soon gained a large practice, equalled by but few physicians in the state. He is recognized to-day by the profession and by the people as one of the most skilled and successful practiioneers in the west, and the high honors which he has gained in this direction are truly merited. He is common in the every day walks of life, pleasant and sociable to one and all alike, and extremely popular with the entire people. This world would not unwisely style him a self-made man. In 1891 he was nominated for the high office of representative by the republican party. The doctor had never been an office-weeker but was content with his profession and his chief ambition seemed to be in its success. Yet he accepted, with seeming defeat staring his party in the face, and made a most excellent campaign. He was elected by 76 majority while the head of the democratic ticket received a majority of 159 votes. The people of Audubon county are proud of him as their representative and that he will serve his constituents to the best of his ability, no one doubts. The doctor is one of the youngest members in the state legislature. He is a member of the A. F. & A. M. and K. of P. lodges in Audubon. Mr. Brooks is also a partner in the drug business of Brooks & Cloughly.
