Gray Cemetery

Gray Cemetery, Audubon County, Iowa

Gray Cemetery, Audubon County, Iowa

Gray Cemetery is located on a hill overlooking the town of Gray. The Gray Community History book indicates the land was originally owned by George Gray, founder of the town. It was surveyed in June, 1882 by H. S. Wattles, county surveyor, and was named "Gray Cemetery."

The cemetery book could not be found at the time the Gray Community History book was written for the Gray Centennial, so research in various other records was done at that time. What information could be found was included in the history book, including a timeline of burials and associated information by year. The history book documented a total of approximately 65 individuals buried in the cemetery, with the first burial apparently being Georgie Farner. Gray cemetery was walked by Donna Thomas in the early 1990's and all existing gravestones were recorded. Donna has generously shared her transcription with IAGenWeb: Gray Cemetery Listing Circa 1990-1993.

Donna walked Gray cemetery again in October, 2011 and photographed all existing gravestones. Those photos have been uploaded to the Iowa Gravestones Photo Project (GPP). Not surprisingly, time and the elements have taken their toll over the intervening years. Numerous stones that Donna recorded in the early 1990's can no longer be found today. Sometime during the intervening years many small old stones were removed and a single shared monument erected with all those individual names inscribed on it. A photo of the new shared monument will be uploaded to Iowagravestones in the near future. The original markers for the individuals included on the shared marker are gone.
