Centerville

Population 7,500. An incorporated city located on the M. & St. L. Ry., the C., R. I. & P. Ry., and the Burlington Route, in Appanoose county, for which it is the judicial seat, 90 miles s.e. of Des Moines, about the same distance from Burlington and Keokuk, and 336 from Chicago. Built upon high and healthy ground and surrounded by moderate elevations, Centerville occupies an ideal site for a city. It has well kept streets and avenues lined on either side with handsome business blocks and residences. Is lighted by electricity and gas, has water works, fire department, electric street car system, excellent educational advantages, public library, Court House and Federal building, 5 banks, opera house, a daily newspaper, the Citizen; a semi-weekly, the Iowegian and 2 weeklies, the Journal and the Sun. There are churches of the Baptist, Catholic, Chrisitan, Hebrew, Methodist, Presbyterian, Swedish Congregational and Swedish Lutheran denominations. Beside the advantage of the rich and finely cultivated country tributary, Centerville is a mining point of considerable importance, there being a number of coal mines in active operation in the immediate vicinity. Among other business features are iron foundries, manufacturing coal cars and all machinery used by coal operators, flour mill, and manufactures of carriages and wagons, brick and tile, cigars, etc. Stages daily to Exline and Cincinnati. Population 1, 300. An incorporated town located on the Wabash R. R. and the Burlington Route (depots 1 mile apart), in Washington township, Appanoose county, 14 miles s.e. of Centerville, the judicial seat, and 98 from Burlington. The Wabash R. R. has completed its line from here direct to Des Moines, via Albia distance 96 miles. Moulton is a growing town, having doubled its population during the past ten years. There is a Business Men’s Club, organized for the purpose of securing legitimate capital and enterprises.
