Population 6,000. A prosperous incorporated city of the second class, and the judicial seat of Appanoose county, is located on the Albia & Centerville, the C., R.I. & P. and the K. & W. Rys., 90 miles from Des Moines and an equal distance from Burlington and Keokuk, and 335 from Chicago, Ill. Built upon high and healthy ground, almost as level as a floor and surrounded by moderate elevations, Centerville occupies an ideal site for a city. It has broad, well kept streets and avenues, which are lined on either side with handsome business blocks, churches and residences. Besides the advantages of a rich and finely cultivated country, Centerville is a mining point of considerable importance, there being no less than 20 coal mines in active operation in the immediate vicinity, the largest shippers, the Centerville Block Coal Co. and the Anchor Co., have their mines directly on the line of the C., R.I. & P. R.R. Other important business features are 3 banks, 2 flour mills, 2 iron foundries, the Centerville Foundry and Machine Works, and the Centerville Iron Works, who manufacture coal cars and all machinery used by coal operators, brick and tile factories, who produce the finest brick in the State, a large and extensive printing office capable of doing all kinds of work, is a new and not the least late addition to the city. It is lighted by gas and electricity, has a street car system, splendid schools, a new school having been built at a cost of $40,000, Churches of the Baptist, Catholic, Christian, Methodist, Presbyterian, Swedish Lutheran and Hebrew denominations, 5 newspapers – a daily, 3 weekly and 1 semi-weekly – the Appanoose Iowegian (Rep), the daily and weekly Citizen (Rep), the Journal (Dem), and the Reform Advocate (Pop), and Russell’s Opera House, seating 500. There is a prospect of an elegant new opera house being built at an early date, which will cost $40,000, the land has already been deeded to the company and an amount necessary guaranteed by the most substantial business people of the city.
