Allamakee Rural school graduates & essay winners, 1950

Commencement Exercises

Arthur Carpenter, supervisor of the state department of public instruction addressed the eighth grade rural school graduates of Allamakee county at commencement exercises held Wednesday afternoon, May 24, in the high school auditorium at Waukon.

Howard Steet, Iowa State Teachers college directed the rural choir during the exercises. The program opened with the processional played by Mrs. Lester Ellingson at the piano.

Curtis Webster pronounced the provocation and benediction. Dorothy Ashbacher, honor student from French Creek No. 1 school, served as master of ceremonies. An accordian solo was played by Anna Mae Schlitter, student at Franklin school No.11.

Essay Awards

Horace Clark, chairman of the Allamakee county soil district, presented the conservation essay awards to the various winners. They were:

Patricia Schmidt, first; Rita Henry, second; John Hawes, third; Shirley So(?)k, fourth; John Cassidy, fifth; Marilyn Drew, sixth; Arleen McCarthy, seventh; and Beverly Kruse, eighth.

Honor Roll Grads

Following the address by Carpenter, M.H. Goede, county superintendent of schools, presented diplomas to 106 graduates. Of this number 21 were on the honor roll. They included:

Dorothy Ashbacher, French Creek No. 1; Dorothy Beall, Linton No. 1; Anita Welch, French Creek No. 1; Patricia Schmidt, Jefferson No. 4; Marjorie Duffy, Makee; Allen Heremeier, Ludlow No. 3; Janice Nolting, Ludlow No. 2; Jane Buntrock, French Creek No. 1; Merton Phipps, Jefferson No. (3); Janice Howes, French Creek No. 6; Bonnie Topel, Fairview No. 4; Roger Powell, Bear Creek; Beverly Kruse, Dorchester.

Other Roll Members

Mary Lou Byrnes, Hanover, No. 4; Janet Welper, Howard; Julia Moe, Fan; Frances Lyons, Lycurgus; Raymond Larkin, Jefferson, No.4; (?) Christianson, Lycurgus; Bonnie Wilkens, Fairview No. 4 and John Hanke, Southwest.
