Fayette County Leader, April 17, 1941:

Kite Is The Cause Of A School Fire

The boys and girls at the Helming School were having a lot of fun on Tuesday, a real spring day, when they were flying their kite during the recess period in the morning. But the bell rang and the boys hastened to tie the kite to a nearby fence post.

The wind continued to plow the kite about until the string caught fire from an electric wire. In spite of recent rains the string ignited the grass and by noon the fire had spread over several hundred feet. The Waukon fire company was called to the rescue and before long had the fire under control, but not before a nearby snow fence had caught fire.

Miss Louise Beiber, teacher of the Helming School, stated that the children had forgotten the kite in all the excitement. – Waukon Republican and Standard.
