FIGGIE SCHOOL PRESENTS GOOD PLAY
In spite of the heavy roads and bad weather a fairly good
crowd attended the home talent play, "What About
Betty," on Friday night in the city hall. The play
was sponsored by the Figgie School and they were assisted
by other young people in the district. It was very well
presented and showed they had given plenty of time to
rehearsals. All carried their part in a credible manner
and the music by Mathilda's orchestra and the songs by
two old maids were very good.
Mrs. Ruth Haberichter, the coach, is to be congratulated
on credibility to present a three act play with so young
a cast. The school is receiving a good deal of credit for
the programs it has been giving.
The muddy roads prevented many from seeing the play on
Friday. Possibly it may be repeated at a future date when
the roads are better.

~Note added by S. Ferrall: a list of rural teachers
printed in the Dubuque Telegraph Herald,
September 15, 1935 includes Marcella Sabbann, of Monona,
teaching in Linton No. 3. Her 2015 obituary gives the
following info.: Marcella attended Iowa State Teachers
College in Cedar Falls, Iowa after which she taught in a
one room rural school. Marcella married Donald Tayek in
1937.

1952
Figgie School Has Strange Experiences
We, the pupils of Figgie school have had strange
experiences this week.
First on Thursday afternoon when school was ready to
close, we found that the door from the entry to the
school room in some mysterious way had been locked.
We kept the little ones from crying by laughing and
cheering while Gary Palmer climbed through the library
window into the entry and unlocked the door.
Then on Wednesday morning, a strange rap came at the
door. Mrs. Russell answered the door and it turned out to
be a man who wanted to take our pictures. We allowed him
to do so. He rewarded us by reciting some funny poems.
But best of all he had with him a wire haired terrier who
did tricks for us.
On Wednesday afternoon three of the children went up into
the attic to look for books and Halloween material.
While prowling around in the dark spaces, Gary Palmer
slipped and fell through the floor. If it hadn't been for
Sharon Kruse and Donna Rose he might have landed on the
seats below. As it was, he escaped with only having to
patch up the hole.
On Friday we had a very exciting Halloween party.
Everyone dressed in very funny and scary costumes.
Mrs. Russell and Gary Palmer judged the costumes and
awarded the first prize to Marliss Rose, second to Nile
Kruse and the third to Jimmy Rose.
After that we played games and bobbed for apples.
Marliss Rose came to school for the first time since she
had injured her hand in automobile accident two weeks
before.
The party was followed by a lunch with popcorn, candy,
cookies, apples, and Kool-Aid, furnished by the children.

Eleven Figgie School Pupils on Honor Roll
The Figgie school closed its semester Jan. 16, with 11
pupils on the honor roll. They are as follows: Donna
Rose, Sheron Kruse, Lillian Levenhagen, Laura Rose,
Sharon Topel, Laverna Peters, Duane Schlitter, Janice
Schlein, Delores Topel, Judy Schlein, and Marliss Rose.
During the six weeks period just ending there was no one
tardy and more than half of the 23 pupils had 100 percent
every day in spelling.
Mrs. Isaac Russell, teacher, gave prizes to those who
wrote the best themes on "How I Spent My Christmas
Vacation." Sheron Kruse won first prize, Laura Rose,
second prize, and Janice Schlein, third prize, Lillian
Levenhagen, Donna Rose, Laverna Peters, Sharon Topel and
Marilyn Timmerman received honorable mention.

Figgie School Ends School With Picnic
Figgie school closed its years activities with a wiener
roast in Suttle Creek woods Thursday, May 14, and a
picnic Tuesday, May 9, to which all parents are invited.
The following pupils are on the honor roll: Sheron Kruse,
Donna Rose, Gary Palmer, Laura Rose, Nile Kruse, Laverna
Peters, Duane Schlitter, Sharon Topel, Janice Schlein,
Gary Kruse, Ruth Rose, Delores Topel, Lorna Larson, Billy
Rose, Judy Schlein, and Deanna Moses, Mary Timmerman, and
Lillian Levenhagen.
Mrs. Isaac Russell, teacher, awarded a prize to Donna
Rose, who had the highest grades for the year. Gifts were
also given to the pupils who assisted Mrs. Russell in
helping to make this year a successful and pleasant
school year for all.
