FORTY-TWO BOYS DEPARTED FOR CAMP YESTERDAY

Allamakee County was called upon for forty-two more young men for the army, and they departed for Camp Dodge yesterday morning on the 6:30 Train. The boys were entertained Wednesday evening with a short band concert at the park, after which they adjourned to the Cota Theatre and took in the “movies.” Emmet Dougherty was selected as captain of the quota, which was made up of the following young men:

The Democrat presents herewith another of those treasured group photos of the young men from Allamakee who are fighting humanity's battles "over there" or are in training camps preparing themselves for participation in the great struggle. This one is of the contingent which departed from Waukon on September 5th and entered upon their training at Camp Dodge. We are sure our readers will appreciate it publication, though we were somewhat delayed in doing so, and that it will find a place along with the numerous ones previously published, to be preserved for years to come as prized souveniers of Allamakee's part in the great conflict.

Men identified in the photo are:

George Waters II (10/1/1896 - 03/15/1970), who is front row 3rd from right, with the white socks. (identified by Diana Diedrich)

Eli Ellis Baily, who is 3rd from left in the front row of standing soldiers (identified by his g-daughter Kathleen Hash).

William Brooks, sitting in the front row very middle with plaid hat on ground in front of him. He is sixth from either end. William was son of John and Carrie Brooks, and my uncle.   After Camp Dodge he was sent to Beouregard Louisana. Then placed in an  medical corps. at  Base Hospital No. 121 Beau Desert, France, where he contacted the disease which finally ended his life in 1927. (identified by his niece, Janet Koozer)

John Nicholas Brennan, far right in the second row from the bottom. There are only three men in that row. I have his obituary as well as a newspaper article honoring him. John, my great uncle, reported to Camp Dodge where he was stricken with the “Spanish Influenza” that ultimately took his life. (identified by his g-nephew Jacob Will, May 2, 2011)

Leo Burns is standing with his arm on his hip. His daughter Ruth Burns Schulte has this same picture that her father had given her and she pointed Leo out to me. (identified by Tammy Kuhn, January 24, 2012)

Joseph O'Hare, wearing a bow tie, may be the man sitting second from the left front row, but his ID will need to be confirmed. (tenative ID by Tammy Kuhn, January 24, 2012)
