Florence (Munger) Jacobia

Florence (Munger) Jacobia

This lady, whose keen sense of humor delights everyone, is featured as the March resident of the Month at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, where she has lived since May 16, 1973.

She was born July 26, 1882 in Elkader. Her parents were Milo and Sophia Lembke Munger. Her father was a shoe repairman there.

Florence attended the Teachers Institute in Elkader and taught schools at Gunder and Edgewood.

On January 26, 1914 she married Ray Jacobia at the home of her parents in Elkader. The first year of their married life was spent in Postville. They then moved to the Jacobia farm where their children Milo, Carol, Dorothy and Della were born. The farm is located two miles north of Gunder.

She enjoyed cooking and sewing for her family and also gardening. She did fancy work, made quilts, crocheted, knitted and embroidered.

The couple enjoyed traveling and they visited Yellowstone Park, Black Hills, Florida and California. She has also visited many other states including Arizona, Idaho, Maryland, New York, Oregon, Arkansas and Washington, D.C.

In 1938 Ray and Florence bought an adjoining farm with the house in Gunder and moved there. Son Milo then took over the home farm.

Following the death of her husband in 1958 she moved to an apartment over Palmquist's Dept. Store in Postville where she continued to be active, including being a volunteer for mending for the Postville hospital. She was also a member of several clubs.

She enjoys all activities at the Center.
