Vernon Barnhouse, son of Tom and Nettie Barnhouse. Wife: Patricia, daughter of Albert and Victoria Traeder. Children: Tim, Brent, Joel, Cynthia and Julie. Tim married Ailene Bruyn, daughter Nancy Bruyn, son, Ian Michael Barnhouse. Brent married Connie Welch; daughters Angela Lynn, Kristie Lou, SuAnn Marie. Brent died of an accident putting up a steel bin. Joel married Elizabeth Jane Anker; daughter Shannon Joel. Joel is serving in the National Guard. Cynthia works at State Hospital at Woodward. Julia is a sophomore at Stuart-Menlo School. They attend Mt. Vernon Church. Vernon served in WWII Army Medical Corps (overseas), lived in Harrison Twp. Prior to present home. Pat graduated from Iowa State Teachers’ College and teaches at Stuart-Menlo Community School.

Ralph Max Barr, son of Mel Barr and Myrtle Thomas Barr, Wife: Martha, daughter of Earnest and Sadie Fry Slaven.  Gary Gene married Lorraine Mills, sons Douglas and Steven. Members of Congregational Church. Martha graduated from Iowa Beauty School and operated a beauty shop in Stuart for 2 years.

Marvin Bassett, son of Fury and Ilo Purviance Bassett. Wife: Martha, daughter of Louis and Isabelle Jewett Wats. Children: Jodie, Scott and Amy. Marvin and Janet were married in Stuart and with the exception of two years in Fontanelle and two years in the Army, have lived in the Stuart area.

John Beattie, son of Charles F. Stuart and Carrie Foltz Beattie, lives on the NW ¼ (E1/2) of Section 3. Wife: Wilma Enid, Daughter of Howard B. and Jessie Long Evans. Children: Linda married Bill Geil: child: Jennifer Marie, Religion: Congregational. Bill’s parents are Robert Geil and Kathryn Marie Anderson. He lost part of a leg in a railroad accident and is a farmer and Angus cattle breeder. She teaches school in Stuart-Menlo Community School. She married D.J. Shirley, lawyer, in 1973. This is a Century Farm, being in the Stuart and Beattie name 107 years. Milton and Mary Mills got part of this from the United States Government. Parts of this land were sold several times and came back several times. Captain Charles Stuart bought it Sept. 2, 1968. It was originally 214 acres.

William Belden, son of Wayne and Leota Wambold Belden, lives on the E1/2 of SW1/4, Section 13. Wife: Lila, daughter of Loren and Celia Shutis Eldridge. Children: Wayne married Jackie Cambell. Child: Wayne Ira. They farm in Lincoln Twp.; Mary Beth married Rodger Frank, a farmer at Fontanelle; Gayla Jean, nurse at Iowa city: Joann, nurse at Des Moines; Carol Joyce married Ronald Bash and lives at DeSoto where he’s a meat cutter at Bookey Pack; Donna Rae married Michael Richardson and lives at DeSoto where he is a meat cutter at Bookey Pack; Ronald Loren is a senior at Stuart-Menlo; all took part in 4-H and sports. Religion: Christian. He: Odd Fellows, 4-H leader, worked in Delaney’s Hardware before he was married, did carpenter and painting work, owns and rents, Farm Bureau secretary. She: 4-H leader, BCNU Club, helps in the field, raises chickens, sells eggs and cream.

Wayne Blomquist, son of Elmer and Ida Pease Blomquist, lives on the SW ¼ of Sec. 12. Wife: Joan, daughter of Dr. George and Ruth Doherty Gamerdinger. Children: Steve, 4-H, married Debbie McKee; Nancy, 4-H married Craig Dickey, Religion: Methodist. He: Marine Veteran (Korean conflict), Odd Fellows, Church Board, Farmers Educational Advisory Council, owns his farm. She: WSCS, Delphian, PTA, BCNU Club, Sunday school teacher.

Raymond Blomquist, son of John and Helma Lumball Blomquist. Lived on the N ½ of the SE ¼ of Sec. 36.  Religion: Presbyterian. Church elder, raised purebred Hampshire hogs, enjoyed taking home movies, farmer 33 years in Lincoln Twp. Moved to Stuart in 1973 and is school janitor at Stuart. Sold his farm to Frances Blomquist (nephew).

F. Raymond Boyle, son of Cord and Cora Emboden Boyle (from Ohio, settled Madison County, 3 miles south of Penn Center; married 1899), lives on the NW ¼ (E ½) of Sec. 20. Wife: Esther Mae, daughter of Jacob Jr., and Mary Schmidt Fink (Jacob and Mary married December 24, 1895, Mt. Vernon church). Child: Claude Raymond married Mary Jane Horka; he attended Simpson College and is a medical technician at Iowa Methodist Hospital.  He: church board trustee, Lincoln Twp. Trustee, Conservation Club trustee since it started, owns farm call “Good Land Farm,” director of Prairie Queen School, worked for $35.00 a month when first married. She: Altruistic club, Sunday school teacher 17 years, 4th grade, WSCS, Garden Club, held many offices in Farm Bureau, Lincoln Twp. President 8 years, first 4-H Leader in Madison County in 1946, taught Sunday School 13 years at Penn Center, taught school in Madison County one year.

Earl M Brinton, son of Nathan and Martha Bathurst Brinton, lives on the SW ¼ (E ½) of Sec. 22. Wife: Hazel, daughter of Benjamin and Fucinda M. Eyman Keeler. Children: Inez married Harold Williamson – child: Karen married Ted Jones, children: Lora and Connie; Howard married Lois Myers-children: Connie, Nancy, Beverly-they live in California; Colleen married George Wheeler-children: Michael and Mark. Religion: Methodist, Mt. Vernon Church. He: WWI, Masonic Lodge, Church Board. His grandfathers were born in Pennsylvania. His maternal grandmother was born in Ohio and paternal grandmother in Illinois. She: Altruistic Club, WSCS, sang in church choir. Her grandparents were William and Malinda Heft Keeler, born in Pennsylvania and Christian and Mary Brenner Eyman, born in Pennsylvania. Keelers were Catholics. Hazel and Earl farmed in Lincoln Twp. 53 years.

Howard Bunnell, son of John and Edith Renshew Bunnell, lives on the NW ¼ of section 13. Wife: Elsie, daughter of Arthur and Sara Shield Hill. Child: John married Mary Hochstetler-children: Steve, Janice, Craig; Earlham School. Religion: Methodist, Mt. Vernon Church. He: Farmer, She: Twp. 4-H leader 4 years, does sewing, WSCS president.

Dan J. Burns, son of James and Alice O’Brian Burns, lives on the N ½ SE ¼ of Sec. 29. Wife: Agnes, daughter of James and Alice Hartley Doud. Children: James J. married Loretta Wedemeyer-children: 2 boys and 3 girls; Regina married Mercer Parker-children: 1 boy and 1 girl. He WW1 Vet-France, director of school board, Federal Land director 15 years, county committeeman 10 years, one of the first F. B. members, director of Mutual Ins., organized into Patrons of Mutual in Dexter. Raised purebred hybrid hogs, retired farmer. She taught school 10 years. Dan believes himself to be the one person in Lincoln Twp. to live on one farm the most consecutive years.

Carl Francis Carter, son of Roy and Mae Lyddon Carter, lives on the S ½ NW ¼ of Sec. 25. 1st wife: Shirley Nelson. Children: Rickie Carl married Lind Landers-children: Jeffrey, Dean, Virginia Shawn; David Francis; Danny Lee; Jerry Lynn married Deanna Rae Girard-child: Jason Girard-divorced. 2nd wife: Beverly Nannenga: Children: Tony and Amy Nannenga. (Divorced). He: Likes to fish, hunt, and farm. Built a new home in 1974.

Larry Gordon Carter, son of Floyd and Goldie Beeler Carter. 1st wife: Marcia, daughter of John and Ruby Johnson Waalk. Child: Tina, 2nd wife: Dianne Mills, daughter of Charles and Ruth Barker Bates. Children: Timmy, Penny; both girls attend Stuart-Menlo Community School. He: Farms now, has driven a Hiland Potato truck, worked at John Deere, worked at Iowa Methodist Hospital, loves music and football, likes to read, fish and hunt. She: Teaches school at Central Dallas, taught swimming lessons, likes all athletic activities, likes to read, garden, make jam and eat it.

Ray Laverne Carter, son of Amos A. and Margaret H. Shield Carter, lives at SE ¼ of Sec. 14. Wife: Florence Mae, daughter of William and Mary Ella Moody Lyddon. Children: Wilbur Lavern married Margy Travis. Wilbur’s children: Sharilyn Jean married Ronald Algreen-children: Pamela Sue married Michael Finnell (child, Travis). Deborah Jean Algreen, Bruce Paul Algreen; Ronald Laverne married Karen Hood-children: Kristen Lea, Jenifer Rae, Eric Ryan; Dale Allen married Jean Smith-children: Chad Allen, Jason Michael; Gary Lee married Audrey McCleaskey-children: Jennifer Lee McCleaskey, Courtney Madaline Carter; Randy Charles; Warren Roy (see his family history), Roy: liked to fish, hunt and farm. Florence: school teacher, UMW, Farm Bureau, Medley Garden, sang in church choir. Religion: Methodist, Mt. Vernon church.

Warren Carter, son of Roy and Mae Lyddon Carter, lives on the NE ¼ of Sec. 24. Wife: Marian, daughter of Howard and Hesper Aronson Mapes. Children: Kenneth Warren; Wayne Kenneth married Nancy Woodson (divorced) daughter Tawnya Diane; Lee Roy Howard. Religion: Methodist, Mt. Vernon Church. He: farmer, built new home, serves on church board, treasurer of Earlham Elevator Board. She: Sunday School teacher, assistant 4-H leader, trustee for Lincoln Twp. Historical Society, F.B. secretary-treasurer of Lincoln Twp., president of WSCS and BCNU Club; collector of salt and pepper shakers. Both like to travel.
Howard Christenson, son of Irvin A. and Bertha Caughey Christenson, lives on the NW ¼ of Sec. 12. Wife: Ella, daughter of Henry and Martha Masson Balkans. Child: Donald married Donita Galliano-children: Misty Michele, Mathilda Sue-Army Vet. 1955-61 (Germany), works at Martin Marietta Concrete, Earlham, Iowa. Religion: Congregational. He: church board, school board, farmer.  She Eastern Star, P.E.O.

Orville Coffman, son of Walter and Edna Brunton Coffman, lives on the S ½ SE ¼ of Sec. 25. Wife: Frances, daughter of Lafe and Hulda Caff Morrison. Children: Rebecca, Gene, Raymond. He: Likes fishing, hunting, woodworking; farmer and helps where needed now. She: likes to do a little bit of everything.

Lester Compton, son of Elmer and Elma Jane Mendenhall Compton, lived on the NW ¼ (S ½) of Sec. 3. Wife: Dortha, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Moore Barr. Religion: Protestant. He: farmer, 17 years in Lincoln Twp. Moved to Redfield in 1974.  Had polio and is crippled. She: Altruistic Club.

Lew A. Cook, son of George W. and Jenett C. Kendall Cook, lived on the E ½ SW ¼ of Sec. 18. Wife: Lucille, daughter of Louis A. and Cecilia Sear Jensen. Children: Rose married Kenneth Web-children: Jeffery, Michael, Deborah, Rowena; Charlene married Herbert Gibson-child, Symantha; Karen married Robert Ashby-child, Andrea. Religion: Congregational. He: farmer, does mechanical and plumbing work, last secretary of Prairie Queen School-had books. Brothers and sisters: Gleen D., Ray, Annie, and David. She: 4-H leader, band mother. Lived in log cabin 1941 to 1944. Lew built log cabin. Moved to Stuart in October, 1973.

Richard Cooper, son of Charles and Eunice Phillips Cooper, lived on the N ½ SE ¼ of Sec. 10. Wife: Belva, daughter of Royal and Izola Middleton Campbell. Children: Steven married Marilyn Branson-children: Richard, James, Renee, Rhonda; Craig married Deborah Wolfe-child: Tammy Lynn. Religion: Protestant. He: farmer, worked for Sears Roebuck in Des Moines, plays guitar, formerly played baseball and softball and softball. She: Girl Scout assistant leader, youth center chaperone, PTA, Garden Club. Historical Society. Belva started all these histories so I wanted to put this in so her grandchildren could read it. Lives and works in Des Moines now. Steven and Marilyn and family live here now.

John Claude Crew, son of James Edgar and Carrie Payton Crew, married Mary Eelitta Blankenbeker, daughter of Charles and Rose Swisher. John was raised by his maternal grandparents, the John Paytons. Mary was raised by her paternal grandparents, the John Sanders. He: worked for Stuart Light Plant, farmed, worked for Rock Island Railroad, A.T. &T. Co. later transferring to the Northwestern Bell. Retired in 1949. Moved to present home in Lincoln Twp. In 1935. Children: Orville F. married Florence Hartley-1 child Evelyn B. married Francis J. Reynolds-5 children; Carrie June married Richard Abele-3 daughters, John Married Janet Green 3 daughters; John, Jr.

Willard Cummings, son of John and Rose E. Brown Cummings, lived on the N ½ NE ¼ of Sec. 15. Wife: Ruth, daughter of Jasper and Annetta Dell Allen Morford. Religion: Christian. He: school board director; sis-Melixin, brother-Harold. Father rented land in Lincoln Twp. 1915 as tenant; his earnings were $480 per year. She: School teacher, C.W.F., Eastern Star, taught 5 years. Lived on farm 39 years and moved to Redfield in 1973. Sold farm to Eldon Egger.

Merle Dankof married at Hamburg to Karen Lea Leckenby. Their children are Scott Allan and Curtis Dale. The family moved to Adair County in 1970.

Clair Dickey son of John and Cecilia McQuaid Dickey. Wife: Patricia, daughter of Donald and Helen Bahl Kean. Children: Maureen-works at Aid Insurance in Des Moines; Debbie married Marl Frank lives near Fontanelle; Bill-is in his 2nd year of pre-veterinary at Iowa State, Ames: Sheilah-is in sixth grade at Stuart-Menlo, Clair farms and works at the Oscar Mayer hog packing plant at Perry. Pat belongs to Altar and Rosary, Catholic Daughters and Parish Council. Pat’s grandmother came from German at the age of 10.

H. Paul Diddy, son of Walter and Ida May Pittman Diddy, lives on the E ½ SE ¼ of Sec. 19. Wife: Doris, daughter of Phillip and Ruth Vandever. Children: Vickie married Clifford Anderson-Children: Amy Michelle, Thomas Paul, Matthew Stuart; Becky married Gene Henry-children: Rick Gene, Jill Lynn; Debbie married Paul Wilson; Dennis married Arlyce Willms. Religion: Christian. He: ASCS Committee, Masonic Lodge, bowls, played softball, Shriner. She: Was Sunday School Superintendent, treasurer of church now, works in Security State Bank as assistant cashier in Menlo.

Kenneth Melvin, son of Clarence William and Ivy Disney, lives on the N ½ NW ¼ of Sec. 15. Wife: Marian, daughter of Fred and Cora Rinehart Ball. Children: Richard married Joyce Wilson-children: James Richard, Rebecca Sue, Sherri Lynn-a load of wood ran over him: Jane married Joe Sherman-children: Theresa, Nancy Jo, Daniel Joseph, and Alan Richard. Religion: Congregational. He: Church board, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, School bus driver, farmer. She: Eastern Star, PEO, 4-H leader, worked at First State Bank at Stuart, plays organ at church, finance chairman at church in 1976.

Martin Doud, son of John and Mary Ellen Lydon Doud, lived on the S ½ SE ¼ of Sec. 32. Wife: Cecilia, daughter of John T. and Anastasia Enright James. Children: Lawrence married Phillis Malone-children Cindy, Susie, Steven, Angela; Phillis married Maurice Borlin-child: Marylea; Charles married Marcella Starr-children: Michael Gregory, Maureen, Maru Ann; Patrick married Mary Sherman-children: John, Theresa, Kathleen, Thomas, David, Mary Frances, Phillip, Marty, Tim, Joan, Danny, Jimmy, Christopher; Mary Ann married Edmund Bendernagel-children: Ann Elizabeth, Jan Marie, Mary Elice, John. Religion: Catholic. He: WWI Medical Corps, Legion, built new home in ‘50s, farmer. She: Rosary and Altar Society. Lawrence served in the Army 1945-1947. Charles served in the Navy 1946-1948. Patrick served in the Army 1953-1955.

Patrick Doud, son of Martin and Cecilia James Doud, lives on the NW ¼ of Sec. 10. Wife: Mary, daughter of William and Ann Cashman Sherman. Children: John, Theresa, Kathleen, Thomas, David, Mary Frances, Phillip, Marty, Tim, Joan, Danny, Jimmy, Christopher.  Religion: Catholic. He: Army Vet. (served in Korea) 1953-1955, Knights of Columbus, worked for Diamond Laboratories near Des Moines, ASCS Committee, raises Hampshire hogs, worked in 4-H, large farmer. She: Altar Society.

Raymond Douglas, son of James E. and Ruth Chamberlain Douglas, lives on one acre in Sec. 11. Wife: Mary, daughter of Wilbur and Cora Belle Lowell Simcoke. Children: Jim married Janone Enright-children: Jim, Jr., Jerry; Nadine married Dennis Genetz (child: Dennis, Jr.) attended. Of Iowa, live in St. Paul, MN; Linda married Ronald Hogbin-children: Ronnie, Jr., Stacy-live at Greenfield. Religion: Congregational. He: former farmer, WWII-Navy, drives semi for Bekins. She: worked as secretary, restaurant, sales clerk, Avon products, Girl Scouts, Legion Auxiliary, P.T.A., Band Mother, and Dispatcher at Sheriff’s office in Greenfield. Her grandparents, Dr. Joe (veterinary) and Stella Webb Simcoke and great-grandparents, Thomas and Lydia Maey Simcoke came from Indiana. Thomas came in 1869 and settled on the NW ¼ of Sec. 10. He also gave Simcoke’s addition to Stuart Cemetery.

Tom Downing, son of John and Mae Miller Downing, lived on the NW ¼ of Sec. 34. Wife: Darlene, daughter of Charles and Elsie Clouse McLuen. Child: Sharon married Roger Belding –children: Jason, Stephanie. Religion: Protestant. He: farmer enjoys hunting and fishing, built a new home, late 60’s. Moved to South Stuart into a large mobile home in 1974. Formerly lived north of Stuart, moved to Lincoln Twp. In 1960. She: Dala Community Club, helps in the field. Jim Kalbach bought this farm and lives there now.

Glen M. Dudley, son of Earl M. and Jenny Mae Marion Dudley, lives on the E ½ NE ¼ of Sec. 6. Wife: Eloise Mae, daughter of Marion M. and Ada Hinkson Brinton. Children: Janice M. married Dennis Marlow-children: Anthony Douglas, Wendy Denise (a twin), Todd Marshall; Warren Brinton, going to college in Cedar Falls-works with Rescue Unit in Stuart; Allen Marian, 7th grade Stuart-Menlo School. Religion: Methodist. He: WWII Army 1945-1948, Masonic Lodge, owns his farm, helps on Rescue Unit. She: Eastern Star, UMW, former teacher. Both graduated from Ames.

Cyrus Earhart, son of Wilbur and Anna Morton Earhart, lives Sec. 9 Center N ½. Wife: Della, daughter of Lloyd and C. Belle Duff Dickey. Children: Michael married Sue Murray-children: Lisa, Teresa, Mark, farms; Michele, Junior at Stuart-Menlo School. Religion: Congregational. He: Guthrie County Farm Mutual Fire Insurance Assn., AID Insurance, owns farm, 4-H leader, CROP solicitor, burned badly in farm fire in 1959, like hunting and flying. She: Bible School, Cub Scouts, church work, sings in choir, likes sewing and reading.

Dennis Eddy, son of George and Rosa Jacobson Eddy lives on the NW ¼ of Sec. 33. Wife: Patricia, daughter of Ralph and Mary Alshouse. Children: Dennis Todd, Christopher Michael, Brian Scott. Religion: Fair View Congregational. He: farmer, raises hogs, likes to hunt, has a new 10-speed bicycle and likes to ride it. She: both like to square dance, rest of time spent raising their family.

Eldon Henry Egger, son of Henry and Mable Clause Egger, lives on the W ½ NW ¼ of Sec. 9. Wife: Wilma Alberta, daughter of Chester and Florance Carter Skellinger. Children: Connie Alberta, senior Stuart-Menlo; Carl Allen, 8th grade Stuart-Menlo School. Religion: Methodist. He: works for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., Farms, moved a different home in for his family in 1969; likes fishing and hunting. She: worked for Dr. Kading 1 ½ years, Northwestern Bell 2 years, in church clubs, likes sewing and reading.

Keith M. Egger, son of Henry and Mable Clause Egger, lives on the N ½ of the NW ¼ of Sec. 7. Tractor caught on fire while filling it and he died of burns. Wife: Dorothy, daughter of Raymond Alfred and Rose Siedelmann Sharon. Children: Douglas, Sherri, Henry. He: Army Veteran 1956-1958, enjoys water sports, was in Reserve Service 4 years. She: PTA, plays musical instruments.

Clifton Ellis, son of Pearly and Susan Patterson Ellis, lives on the SW ¼ of Sec. 5. Wife: Beulah, daughter of Charles C. and Ellen K. Vaughan Graves. Children: Marjorie married Jim Draman-children: Karen married Dave McKee (children: Michele, Amy): Robert married Maxine Glasscock-children: Donna married Craig Jorgenson (children: Mathew, Mark, Jessica, Aaron), Steve married Deanna Slinker (child, Cory). Religion: Congregational. He: WWI Coast Artillery, Legion. She: Legion Auxiliary.

George Warner Eversull married Mary Augusta (Mayme) Barnett. Children: Rolland Edward Eversull; Edwin Elmer; Helen Louise Penfold; Hazel Clair Pettit; Grace Evelyn Clarkson; William Elstun; George Robert, died in a plane crash while serving in the Army; John Henry. George and Mayme farmed for years in Lincoln Twp. And attended Mt. Vernon Church. George’s parents and children: Rolland Cumberland and Eusabia Rigg Eversull; Edna Pryor, Art, George Warner, Frank, Joe, and Harry-Albert Walter and Effie Sophronis passed away in youth. Mayme’s parents and children: Joseph Warrington and Ann E. Belden Barnett; Minnie Ethel Shirk, Mary Augusta (Mayme) Eversull, Bert J. Nellie Sara Brooher, Joe R. Bessie Estella Barnett, Myrtle Frances Pease, William Maurice, Aurel Dorothy Eaton.

William “Bill” Eversull, son of George and Mayme Barnett Eversull, lives on the NW ¼ of Sec. 24. Wife: Marie, daughter of John and Gertrude Butler. Children: Nancy married John Algar-children; Dean and Joan; Karen married Martin Scott-child: Kevin; Linda, works in Des Moines at Younkers. Religion: Methodist, Mt. Vernon Church. He: WWII, farmer worked at Bendix Radio in Baltimore. Maryland and Townson, NY, before coming to Lincoln Twp. To farm on his dad’s farm. She: from New York City, worked for Elizabeth Arden, mailing house in Des Moines.

Fred Fink, son of Jacof Frank and Mary Chirstine Schmidt Fink, lives on the E ½ NE ¼ of Sec. 25. Wife: Elaine, daughter of Gus A. and Mary Alice May Holderbaum. Religion: Presbyterian. Children: Marailyn married Jock Weesner (divorced)-child: Mary Christine; Maxine married Arthur Huntington-children: Karon Kay, Sharon Marie; Norma Jean married Jim Garwood-child: Pamela Lynn. He: farmer, they bought farm in 1956. Farm has had just 3 owners, Wetrich, Wise and Fink. Each had it 50 years. Finks 20 years. Fred is first cousin to Wetrick. She: Her mother had a sister Ina and a brother Ed. Elaine likes flowers, gardening, sewing, and has had lots of hobbies but eyesight has slowed this down the last few years.

W. George Fink, Eldon S. Fink and Daisy Fink were the children of Jacob and Mary Schmidt Fink. Eldon S. Fink lives on the N ½ NW ¼ of Sec. 21. Religion: Christian, member of Penn Center church. Eldon Fink served in WWII went to service Feb. 9, 1942. In South Pacific 3 years and was in all those islands and came home Aug. 29, 1946. Eldon trained at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and Chanute Field, Ill. and in Washington State before going overseas. Has lots of souvenirs of the war.

Jack Bruce Fredrickson and Earl Dean Fredrickson are sons of Richard C. and Kathleen Fredrickson. The boys are helping their uncle and aunt (Emil and Alma Fillman) with the farming. They graduated from Paton-Churdan High School. Jack took a college course and wants to be a farmer.

Curtis Gilman, son of Henry and Dora Ketelsen Gilman. Wife: Juanita Forcht, daughter of Clarence and Opal cline Forcht. Sons: Kenneth married Janet Lee Christensen, daughter of Verle Ray and Marilyn Juanita Owens Christensen; Wayne married Janis Greubel, daughter of Albert and Lucille Greubel. Kenneth farms with his dad, graduated from Ames College. Janet works at Standard Oil Credit Card Co. in Des Moines. Wayne and Janis live at Strawberry Point and both teach school.

Harold Gilman, son of Milo and Leah Cooley Gilman, lives on the SW ¼ of Sec. 26. Wife: Leona, daughter of Alex and Edna Just Oberhaltz. Children: Mary, works for Blue Cross and Blue Shield at Marshalltown; Warren married Teresa Antrim, farmer. Religion: Fair View church. He: WWII Vet, Legion, land owner, County Fair Board, church Trustee, 4-H leader. She: WSCS, former school teacher, 4-H leader, Farm Bureau county chairman, BCNU Club.

Bernard Gittins, son of Harold and Marcella Bates Gittins, married Martha, daughter of Elmer and Clarene Marean. Three children: Marian Jean married Richard E Gomey (children: Patricia Lynn and Brian Eugene): Mark Douglas: Dianne Marie. They moved to Stuart in Lincoln Township. May 30, 1967. They built the Stuart Horse & Sale Barn and have been in the horse sale and buying business 25 years.

Earl Gray, son of Roy C. and Mae Eda Foley Gray, lives on the NE ¼ of Sec. 27. Wife: Marcella, daughter of Dayton V. and Margaret Hughes Tracy. Children: Dennis and Bradley. Religion: Congregational. He: farming, bowling alley manager, trapping, woodworking. She: works at Truck Haven, sang in church choir for 15 years.

Roy C. Gray, son of William J. and Minnie B Doulton Gray, lived on the NE ¼ of Sec. 27. Wife: Mae Edna, daughter of John and Ruth Bennett Foley. Children: Ruth married Edward Birdsall-child; Joan (adopted); Dorothy married Doyle Hunter-children: Brian, Alan, Larry; Earl married Marcella Tracy-Children: Bradley, Dennis. Religion: Methodist, Mt. Vernon Church. He: Odd Fellows, 4-H leader, likes to fish, lived 54 years in Adair County, farmed 37 years in Lincoln Twp., moved to Stuart in 1971. Earl lives on the farm now. She: WSCS, Women’s Club, Church pianist for years. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary March 10, 1974.

Living on Sec. 23, SE ¼ : John Hadley, married to Maxine Schell (Coast Guard Veteran, Legion, farmer;) Ober Hadley, both sons of Charles and Grace Harris Hadley. Ober married Bernetta Huggins-child: Charles married Katherine Klingaman (children: Steven, John, Susan, James) Helen Hadley, former school teacher who takes care of the family, and Merle Hadley Coulter are daughters of Charles and Grace Harris Hadley. Religion: Protestant.

Dwight E. Hawley, son of Henry and Mabel Guttenfelder Hawley, lives on the NW ¼ of Sec. 16. Wife: Myrna, daughter of Gerald and Mabel Jensen Bochart. Children: Diane Renae and Tracie. Religion: Lutheran. He: Lincoln Twp. Assessor, farmer, owns and rents. She: Bookkeeper at Dexter Hospital.

Frank, son of Charles Eugene and Electa Stanton Hawthorne, lives on the W ½ SW ¼ of Sec 23. Wife: Frances, daughter of Benjamin W. and Lucinda M. Egman Keeler (Catholics). Children: Albert Jr., farmer. Religion: Methodist. He: Charter member REC, School Board, Twp. Clerk, Masonic Lodge. She: Sang in church choir, Farm Bureau. Her grandparents: William and Malinda Heft Keeler; Christian and Mary Brenner Eyman.

Harry, son of Simeon and Bertha Oldham Henkle, lives on Sec. 20, W ½ SW ¼. Wife: Helen, daughter of William Edward and Charlotte Hess Volz. Children: Claire Gene married Aola Roe (daughter Cynthia). Religion: Methodist. He: School board director, managed Piatt Bros. Elevator in Dexter, Elevator Board. She: WSCS.

Jim Hillgren, son of William B. Allison and Mable Pencock Hillgren, lives on the NE ¼ SE ¼ of Sec. 3. Wife: JoAnn, daughter of Ralph Eaton and Rose Mae Stoner. Children: Kimberly Allen married Carla McLuen-children; Angela Dawn, Michael Lee; Kevin Lee, Kristiana Ann, freshman Stuart-Menlo School; James A., Jr., 7th grade, Stuart-Menlo School. He: works in Des Moines and farms. Formerly married to Veneta Lynch, had a daughter that died of leukemia at age 9. She: raised St. Bernard dogs for 12 years. Trade name was” Enderly Kennels”.

Ronnie Edwin Hiscocks married Donna Van Horn. Their children: Keith P. Leslie and Denise Horn. Their children: Keith P. Leslie and Denise M. Leslie.  They are self-employed and she is a secretary. Donna’s parents are Keith and Doris Lyon Van Horn, who are in the school business; Ted and Betty McNelly Hiscocks are in Santa Anna, California.

Robert Dean Huff married Millicent Lafern James. Their children are James Dean, Denise Elaine, and Randall Warren. He is a mechanic and they lived in Lincoln Township for eleven years.

Joe James (bachelor), John A. James, sons of John T. and Anastasia Enright James, live on the SE ¼ of Sec. 4. Wife: Nellie, daughter of Charles and Nettie Rose Tobin. Children: Marilyn married Ray Sackett-children: Debbie, Barbara, Timothy; Robert married Sue Coldiron (child: Tracy), married Janet Gamerdinger-children: Susan, Ann, Bill, Ellen, Mary Gamerdinger and Michael James; John T. married Fran Sherman-children: Patrick, William, Scott, Troy. Religion: Catholic.

Robert James, son of John A. and Nellie James married Janet Gamerdinger, daughter of William J. and Anna Cashman Sherman. Children: Susan Gamerdinger, Ann Gamerdinger, Bill Gamerdinger, Ellen Gamerdinger, Tracy James, Mary Gamerdinger, Michael James. Religion: Catholic. He: Electrical Engineer at Straight Engineering Co. at Adel. She: BSNU Club, works in Church work.

Donald Johnson, son of Gerald and Clara James Johnson, lives on the SE ¼ of Sec. 18. Wife: Ocelia, daughter of Frank and Maggie Davidson Lee. Children: Lee, farming and trucking; David married Karen Wallace-children: Matthew and Michael; Nancy works in Des Moines: Charles, senior at Stuart-Menlo School. Religion : Catholic. She is active in church work and helps on the farm. Don and sons have served the community in operating a corn sheller, trucking, and now owns and operates the Dexter Grain Co., Inc. He is a grain and livestock farmer.

William Charles Johnson a twin son of Charles and Nora Ruddy Johnson. Lived on the W ½ NW ¼ of Sec. 20. He married Lily Egy. Six children were born to this union: Mary, William, Veronica, Catherine, Naomi and Cecelia.

Kading, son of Arthur Monroe and Carrie Engline Mowry Kading, lives on the SW ¼ of Sec. 17. Wife: Elaine, daughter of James Henry and Anna Belle Glade Law. Children: Bruce, graduated from Iowa State College, married Marcia Anderson (they adopted a little Korean girl, Beth Kyong) Moved in 1962, milks lots of cows. She: Catholic Daughters, Altar and Rosary Society.

Glenn Urquhart, son of George and Agnes Thomson Urquhart, lives on the SW ¼ of Sec. 11. Wife: Lorraine, daughter of John and Faye Brommer Shephard. Children: Dwayne, served in the Air Force 4 years in Vietnam; Gale married Diana Pearson, served in Vietnam March 169-1971 (18 months); Kathleen married Jerry L. Miller-children: Tony Lee, Michelle Lynn; Donna married James Comstock; Janice; Lavonne; Keith; Mary Ann. Religion: Congregational. He: WWII Air Force Veteran, Legion, 4-H leader. Farm in Urquhart family since 1910. She: 4-H leader, BCNU Club, Ladies Aid.

Robert A. Van Aernam, son of Arthur and Alice Bashun Van Aernam, lives on the N ½ SE ¼ of Sec 33. Wife: Mary, daughter of Patrick and Helen McCarthy Marnin. Children: Richard Robert married Carol Miller-children: Bobbie and Susan; Mary Daye married Cleon Klemish-children: James and Mary Beth. Religion: Catholic. He: bought farm in 1965, built new home in 1967. She: Catholic daughters, Altar and Rosary Society.

Francis Wagner, son of John and Ellen Lydon Wagner, lives on the W ½ SE ¼ of Sec. 17. Wife: Virginia, daughter of Steve and Anna Kneip Lambi. Children: Mary, Bill, JoAnn, Regina, Betty, Helen, Patty. Religion: Catholic. He: Holy Name Society, school directory, 4-H leader, has lived on this farm 20 years. She: Altar and Rosary Society, lots of hobbies.

Louis Waltz, son of Amiel and Mary Conrad Waltz, lives on the NE ¼ of Sec. 28. Wife: Isabelle, daughter of Clarence and Stella McDermott Jewett. Children: Judy married Dean Houts; Janet married Marvin Basset-children: Judie, Scott, Amy; Mickey married Lou Carol. Religion: Catholic. He: worked for John Deere Co., member of Parish Council, bought farm in 1961, and milked lots of cows till 1973. She: Altar and Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters.

Kenneth Wasson, son of John and Maude Moore Wasson, lives on the NE ¼ of Sec. 23. Wife: Joselyn, daughter of George and Evelyn French Herring. Children: Maureen and John (farms, flies an airplane has a lighted airstrip, helps Tom Link at funeral home in Stuart, helps Stuart Rescue Unit. He: on church board at Mt. Vernon for many years, farms.

Larry Watts, son of Merle Watts, lives on Sec. 18. Wife: Faye, daughter of Leon Thompson. Occupation: Farmer, general livestock. Children: Renee Ann and Russell Lee.

Elmer Westlin married Clara Marie Hennings and had one son, Virgil, and one daughter, Manda Malode, who married Flight Officer Wesley G. Alston. A son, Richard Elmer, married Diane Fulk and they have a son, Richard William.

George A Wheeler, son of Edward and Flaretta Greene Wheeler, lives on the E ½ SW ¼ of Sec. 22. Wife: Colleen, daughter of Earl and Hazel Keeler Brinton. Children: Mike and Mark. Religion: Methodist. He: Coast Guard (Korean Conflict), Legion, church board, sold Funk Bros. seed corn, breeds quarter horses, Odd Fellows. She: Rebekahs, PTA, BCNU Club, worked as secretary in Des Moines, Stuart Elevator, now at Jontz Insurance, helps with the farming.

Marvin D. Whetstone married Vera Mae O’Toole. Children: Dan, Bruce and Meleah. Marvin bought the Art Whittum farm at a public auction in 1971. Marvin’s occupation is farmer, auctioneer, and real estate salesman. Vera is a dental hygienist.

James Wigton, son of Carroll and Creta Barn Wigton, lives on the NE ¼ of Sec. 10. Wife: Shirley Ann, daughter of James and Ellen Herring Leighty. Children: Michael and Julie. Religion: Methodist. He: Graduated from Iowa State in Mathematics in 1966, was a graduate assistant at Iowa State, supervisor at Bankers Life 8 years, played football, likes sports, bought farm, 1970. She: President of PEO at Stuart, held offices in church work, taught cake decorating at night school in 1975, likes music, sings in choir, former teacher, substitutes at Dexfield School, graduated from Iowa State in 1966 with a degree in Elementary Education, taught at Boone.

John Williams, son of Edward and Rilla May Golman Williams, lives on the S ½ NW ¼ of Sec. 1. Wife: Ethel, daughter of Ray and Gertrude White. Children: John, Robert, Karma and Marie. Wife: Wilma Moore, daughter of Asa and Rosa McClure Smith. Children Sherman Moore; Anthony and Andrew (twins); Mickey Lee; Samuel; John; Wilma.

Sherman Williams, son of Edward and Rilla Mae Golman Williams, lived on the W ½ NE ¼ of Sec. 27. Wife: Faye, daughter of Elmer and Estelle Ellison Hatfield. Children: Hayden, Warren, Elbert, Donald. Religion: Methodist, Mt. Vernon Church. He: Twp. Clerk, church treasurer, liked children and people, would help anyone in need. She: UMW, moved to Lincoln Twp. In 1949, moved to Stuart, 1975, raised and dressed lots of chickens, sold eggs.

Arthur H. Whittum, son of George and Emma Easton, lived on the NW ¼ of Sec. 19. Wife: Orpha daughter of W. F. and Grant Barnes. Arthur was
